It seems that we have to wait quite some time for all our belongings that we have shipped from Los Angeles, so this weekend I had to be creative and handy(!), so we can have a "home" while we are waiting...
One of the things that I made this weekend was this dining table inspired by the lovely blog "Helt Enkelt", and I´m very happy with the result. I got exactly the look that I wanted -rustic and cosy!
I got some old chairs from my mom, that I painted white. Cool, right?
Here is how our dining table looked like before when we lived in LA.

Many tables have tops that can be adjusted to change their position, shape or size, either with foldable extensions or sliding parts that can alter the shape of the top. Some tables are entirely foldable for easy transportation like camping table.

The table looks great! We are thinking about building a table like this but are curious how you attached the legs to the table top. Looking at the legs on the site it doesn't look like there are holes for attaching the table legs.

ReplyDeleteBena er ikke festet, det ligger kun oppå bukkene fra Ikea. De er ikke laget for å feste det til platen, men du kan jo sikkert bruke metallstrips eller noe sånt, som du skrur i platen.
Plankene jeg brukte her var 1.9 x 14,8cm. Velg gjerne litt tykkere om du vil et et bord som er større en 150cm for mer stødighet.

Thanks for this post, I found it linked from AT awhile ago and recently made it. I have to point out a really important modification. The 1x3 (or whatever size) strips you used on the bottom as braces should be standing on their side so the 1 inch side, not the 3 inch side is against the planks. I did this how you pictured and in only a few days the sides of the table started bowing down. Placing the braces vertically as I've suggested fix this - because the braces will not flex as much (think of an 'I-beam') in that direction.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, I added another set of bracing strips about an inch away so that the top of the leg piece fits snug in there between them so the table top doesnt shift around. I actually also chopped 2 little 1x1 inch wide pieces and put them on the ends between the two strips so it makes a nice little box that the legs fit snugly into.
Minwax has a new stain pretty similiar to the one you used.

ReplyDeleteSo since there ins't any screw holes or any real way to attach the legs to the table top, how do you make it stay? If you bump into it, will it fall off? I really want to make this desk but not if it's not sturdy enough to handle simple bumps and pushes. I'm kind of clumsy and my desk will take some abuse.
ReplyDeleteIf you have used heavy enough boards it should be a problem. But you can attach a metal strip with holes in to screw it to the boards if you like... Difficult to describe in words(and English :))..
